| ABOUT US...Norman Hood and his wife Doe formed their cartoon studio in 1984, originally printing T-shirts and trophies as well until the response to Norman's artwork forced them to concentrate solely on that side of the business. Today, they deal with orders from companies and individuals all over the world. Each item is personally produced by Norman, without the aid of mirrors or computers, and his signature on a cartoon signifies a truly original piece of work. More about NORMAN HOOD...
Prior to this, Norman spent many years in the music business from the late 60's. He originally managed a local blues group - The Levi Set – finding singer/guitarist Jeremy Spencer a place in the original Fleetwood Mac line-up. Running his own blues club and agency in the Midlands, Norman got to know many of the leading lights in the progressive boom of the early Seventies, and spent many happy hours going up and down motorways in the back of Black Sabbaths van. He lived through a pre-MTV version of ‘The Osbournes’, with Ozzy being a constant unpredictable presence! Norman then joined ex-Sabs manager Jim Simpson locating and touring US Bluesmen throughout the UK and Europe, representing, amongst others, Champion Jack Dupree, Lightning Slim and Homesick James. When Sabbath became successful, Norman opened TRAMP, later becoming IMA, an agency in Birmingham with his great friend, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and Ric Lee, drummer with legendary Woodstock band Ten Years After. They handled - amongst others – heavy metal stars Judas Priest, who the company managed for a while. When Sabbath became mainly US-based, Norman re-joined Jim Simpson who was then promoting the Birmingham International Jazz Festival, working with the likes of Buddy Rich and the Count Basie Orchestra. Normans work appears regularly in the media. Norman has been seen on BBC News, Sky Sports Premier League World, and he and Doe have been featured in a week-long series on UK television. He is the ‘house’ cartoonist for several large companies and organisations, many of whom now have an established tradition of presenting employees with a Cartoon Portrait to mark an achievement, promotion or retirement. Amongst the major companies using the studio are KPMG, Courage, Coors, Cadbury Schweppes, Ebay, Punch Taverns, Greater Manchester Police, Orange, Severn Trent, Airbus UK, Cancer Research, Blue Cross, Carlsberg Brewery, Black & Decker, City of Hamilton, New Zealand and the Falkland Islands Government. He was also responsible for the Marstons Brewery and Hepworth Minerals calendars for many years, and these are now highly prized collectables, according to eBay! The first celebrity client was the legendary Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards who remains a firm friend of the couple, and the late Bob Monkhouse was very supportive in the early days of the studio. Since then, subjects have included many celebrities, sporting personalities and a sprinkling of Royalty, both British and Continental. In addition, he has been official Club Cartoonist for Aston Villa Football Club since 1991, and also works for Birmingham City Football Club, Northampton Town FC and Clyde FC. His cartoons have also been featured on ITV during the build-up to the last two FA Cup Finals, and work is also featured at both Edgbaston Cricket Ground and Twickenham , the home of English Rugby. |
